The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission Act 1989 established ATSIC and first came into operation on 5 March 1990. The Act has since been amended on a number of occasions, and was the subject of a major Government review. On 15 April the Australian Government announced its intention to close down ATSIC

Aleut International Association
In September of 1998 the Aleut International Association (AIA) was formed, resulting in the first formal organization of Aleut people in over 178 years. The purpose of the organization is to protect the natural resources and the environment of the region surrounding the Aleut homelands, which is threatened today by the impact of the Russian economy, pollution, climate change and the commercial fishing fleets of several nations.

Indigenous Environmental Network
Established in 1990 within the United States, IEN was formed by grassroots Indigenous peoples and individuals to address environmental and economic justice issues (EJ). Nisga`a People
Since time immemorial, the Nisga`a have lived in the Nass River valley as members of an elaborate and complex society with its own cultural traditions, languages, territorial boundaries and systems of government and law.

Ogiek people
The Ogiek, an indigenous people living mainly in Kenya`s Mau and Mt.Elgon Forests, are fighting to remain in their ancestral homeland. The former government tried to force them out of the forests, allegedly to protect the environment. But the Ogiek pose not only no environmental threat, but are actually the guardians of these forests since time immemorial.

Saami Council
The Saami Council is a voluntary Saami organization (a non–governmental organization), with Saami member organizations in Finland, Russia, Norway and Sweden. Since its foundation in 1956 the Saami Council has actively dealt with Saami policy tasks. For this reason the Saami Council is one of the indigenous peoples’ organizations which have existed longest.

Aboriginal Languages of Australia
There are more than 200 Australian Indigenous languages. About 20 languages are strong, but endangered: the others have been destroyed, live in the memories of the elderly, or are being revived by their communities.
